Radio Program Imagine: Peace is Possible

“Imagine: Peace is Possible” is a radio program created in March of 2003 by
Maria Elena Lopez Vinader, hosted by the Radio of the  University of Misiones, Argentina and available on the
Internet. The program is geared to promote democracy, human rights, cultural
understanding and, last but not least, to empower people towards becoming
active participants in their own lives; instilling hope that it is possible to
develop an “attitude” of peace which respects and celebrates life, learning to
accept and solve conflicts without violence. The themes have to do with the
preservation of nature, peace education, as well as information about local and
global events.
Artists, educators, and friends come from abroad to see the program.
Special collaboration comes with members of T:AP(Network forum of Artists) through music, comments
and phone calls from Japan, the US, Canada, Pakistan, Israel among others.  Taped conversations
with prominent people in the field of peace education, art or music therapy are also
part of the program.
The music is carefully selected for its meaning which sometimes is carried by
the lyrics, the music and sometimes by the cultures it represents. Exposure and appreciation
of music from other cultures can promote a sense of acceptance, oneness
and belonging to our “diverse” human family.  Music therapist Even Ruud says:
“Belongingness concerns not only our relationships to other people or larger
groups or communities but also our feeling of being at home in the larger
world, in history and geography”(Ruud 1998: 64).
Sometimes I may play an instrument with the guest or sing a song or invite
the audience to a “guided relaxation” with the intention of creating a feeling of
inner peace. On 22 November 2005 the day of music in Argentina and other
countries ( the day of St. Cecile, Patron of music), we celebrated our
100th program. There was a special “on the air party” with the Director of
the radio station Pedro Silva and some friends playing live music on the air.
He said:
“The University needs a space like this where open dialogue is practiced, allowing
pluralistic views and tolerance, something which doesn’t necessarily happen
among the faculty members of the University where competition and power
struggle seems to be the norm. We are happy to have a program like this ...”
The final sounds of the program either a Tibetan singing bowl or the peace bell
made with recycled weapons from WWII. It has the shape of a Buddha with a
heart on the head which means we need to unite head and heart. It has a beautiful
soothing sound and it has been used at many peace vigils and ceremonies.
We unite in this sound with our intention for a brighter humanity.
